November at the Authentic Leadership Center!

Dear Leaders,

Recently I was in involved in two inspiring conferences that relate directly to our work as authentic leaders.  The International Leadership Association (ILA) conference took place in West Palm Beach, Florida with over 2,000 participants.  The theme for the entire event was "Authentic Leadership for Progress, Peace and Prosperity."  A little idealistic perhaps, but definitely well-intentioned.  One highlight was the keynote by Donna Ladkin, Ph.D. of Antioch University who suggested that Authentic Leadership can be a confusing concept in today's political environment.  She suggested that it might be better understood if we focus less on finding and expressing the "authentic self" and instead focus on how we, as leaders, can engage authentically with others in the ever-changing "relational field."  She had many negative examples of what she called "unmediated authenticity" that we are seeing in politics today and contrasted that with a more genuine and non-ego driven version of authenticity that is oriented toward compassion and service.  There were hundreds of workshops, symposia and panels offered.  My workshop was on The Role of Mindfulness in Cultivating Authentic Leaders: 5 Essential Practices.

The "Mindful Leadership Summit" was held in Washington DC.  This is the 5th year it has been offered, and Naropa University has always been a partner.  Last year I presented a workshop on "Creating a Culture of Mindfulness in Your Organization."  This year, Chuck Lief, President of Naropa and Regina Smith, Director of Mission Integration and Student Affairs offered a demonstration of the "Warrior's Exam" method utilized at Naropa for invoking bravery and authenticity on the spot.  Bill George, author of "Authentic Leadership" and "True North" was a keynote speaker as well as Neuroscientist Judson Brewer, MD, Ph.D., Director of Research and Innovation at Brown University who spoke about the impact of mindfulness practice for training the brain.  He illustrated how mindfulness can help us move beyond "self preservation" as leaders and instead embrace empathy and compassion in our interactions with others.

I am encouraged by the explosion of interest in Authentic Leadership and its connection to mindfulness.  It is a growing field of inquiry and there are many opportunities to explore and expand both our knowledge and our practice.  On December 6th, 7th & 8th we are providing an innovative program for the Natural Products Industry called "Authentic Leadership for Naturals." We look forward to seeing you there or at another upcoming program.  Thank you for your interest and engagement in this exciting journey.

With Gratitude,

Susan Skjei
