Working with Hope and Fear

Dear Leaders,

Every day there are new events that can trigger feelings of anxiety and concern.  Here we are at the beginning of October with just about a month before the mid-term elections.  Regardless of your political leanings, the stakes are high and we may fluctuate between feelings of hope and fear.  How can we bring mindfulness and authentic leadership into this very moment?

Let's start with mindfulness.  How are you feeling right now?  What are you experiencing?  It is often helpful to begin with the "felt sense" of the body, noticing any tension in the torso, arms or legs and bringing awareness to that.  Our feelings might be uncomfortable, but noticing and welcoming them is the beginning of making friends with them.  If we are anxious, so be it.  If we are feeling fearful, so be it.  Feel your feelings and be with them fully.

Mindfulness does not mean we are numb to our experience, but it does allow us to detach from the reactions of our feelings enough to bring some space and perspective into the moment.  Then opposite of fear is hope.  Why is hope a problem?  Because we are afraid to lose something that is important to us, we hold on so tightly that we are blind to other input.  Mindfulness can help us notice when we are experiencing fear—not wanting something to happen, or hope--wanting something to happen to the exclusion of anything else.

Once we have established some connection with our own mindfulness and have begun to accept our feelings in the moment we can then practice authentic leadership.  How might that work?  We can ask ourselves, what would be most beneficial for the good of the whole?  We can also ask, what are my core values and what do I want to stand for in this moment?  When we set our intention to be genuine, open to ours and others' experience and to hold true to our values, we can provide a role model for others.  Even in times of difficulty, we can show up as a beacon of stability and inspiration.

Regardless of how you vote in November, please do vote and take a stand based on your core values and beliefs and what you feel will be most beneficial to society as a whole.

With appreciation,

Susan Skjei
