Cultivating Trust

Dear Leaders,

Recently, I have been thinking a lot about trust.  It seems that on some fundamental level, trust is something that we tend to take for granted—until it is gone, that is.  Then we may wonder where it went and why we had it in the first place.   These are certainly interesting questions but perhaps the most important leadership questions are "How can I foster a culture of trust and how can I repair trust if it is broken?"

Nobody is perfect.   And yet, when as leaders we project an image of perfection or are unwilling to receive feedback, we are setting ourselves up for a fall.  Trust is built on candor and vulnerability.   This is something we need to model early and often in our own teams.  Sure, showing strength and confidence is great when it is real, however, sometimes, as leaders, the best way to inspire trust is to share our dilemmas, problems and concerns and to invite in others' creativity—especially during times of rapid change or transition. This begins to build capacity on the team for dealing with "reality" and unrealistic expectations can be brought to light.  In this way, mutual respect and resilience can be built, one conversation at a time.  Maintaining trust is an ongoing process.  Tending to small issues can avoid melt-downs and cultivate trust along the way.

What can you do if trust is broken?  If there is a basic ground of mutual respect, trust can usually be repaired, but it still takes some work.  The first step is to openly acknowledge there has been a breach of trust and to apologize for any hurt or pain that was caused.  For example, if someone told you something in confidence and you mistakenly mentioned it in a meeting, you need to acknowledge it and apologize.  Likewise, if the organization does something that erodes trust, such as unexpected layoffs, the impact needs to be acknowledged and the feelings of those affected need to be respected.  The next step is to engage in open dialogue and to offer reasonable repair.  This takes courage, but is well worth the effort.  Finally, it is important to recommit to open communication and mutual respect going forward.

Although we often take trust for granted, building trust is a leadership skill that we can get better at with intention and practice.

With gratitude,

Susan Skjei
